Boca Tapada has quietly become Costa Rica's most important destination for serious wildlife photographers — and the lodges in this remote Northern Lowland region are part of what makes it so extraordinary. Whether you are based here for two nights or a week, each property offers a unique combination of habitat access, atmosphere and proximity to the specialist photography sessions led by Edward Vargas (Maquenque Wildlife Spots). Here is our honest guide to where to stay — and how to combine your lodge with a full photography programme.

For the Agami Heron nesting colony, Great Green Macaw nesting and Bat Multi-Flash sessions, book at least 30 days in advance — these are high-demand, limited-capacity sessions. Other Edward Vargas sessions typically confirm within 24–48 hours. The Full-Day Expedition from La Fortuna should be booked at least 48 hours ahead.
Yes — the VIVO Expeditions Full-Day Bird Photography Expedition departs La Fortuna at approximately 5:30 AM and returns by 7:00 PM. For Edward Vargas specialist sessions, day trips are also possible if you have your own transport or arrange the private transfer. Overnight stays are strongly recommended for multi-session photography programmes.
The road is paved to Pital and manageable with a regular car in dry season (December–April). During rainy season (May–November), a 4x4 is recommended for the final section. VIVO Expeditions transport uses appropriate vehicles for all conditions.
