Everyone books the park first, which leaves the surrounding forest and the Damas estuary comparatively empty at exactly the hours wildlife is moving. For a second day in the area — or a first day when the park is sold out — this is the stronger option.
Two very different environments sit within twenty minutes of each other: closed-canopy rainforest on foot, and a tidal mangrove system worked from a boat. Together they cover the coastal-forest species list better than the park alone.
Rainforest reserve trails
Private reserve trails behind the coast hold squirrel monkeys, sloths, toucans and understory birds, with no entry cap and no queue. Because the group controls the pace, stops last as long as the animal does.
Damas mangrove by boat
The estuary runs on tide, not clock: a rising tide opens the narrow channels where night herons, boat-billed herons, crab-eating raccoons and mangrove-specialist birds sit close to the water. Departure times shift with the tide table, and we schedule around it.
Pairing the two
Forest in the morning, mangrove in the afternoon on the same day works when the tide cooperates. When it does not, we split them across two days rather than force a low-tide boat trip that shows you mud.

- Early morning or late afternoon. Midday is the weakest window on this coast and we schedule around it.
- Terrain
- Mixed: road-edge forest, private reserve trails and boat time in mangrove channels depending on the outing chosen.
- Bring
- Insect repellent for mangrove hours, sun protection, and water. Humidity here is higher than the guidebooks suggest.
- Pace
- Fewer people per guide than the park loop, which is what makes scope views and unhurried sightings possible.

- It is different. The park has the iconic trails and beaches; the reserve and mangrove give closer, calmer wildlife time. Most guests who stay two nights do both.
- Do mangrove tours depend on the tide?
- Yes. We schedule departures against the tide table so the narrow channels are navigable, which is why the start time varies by date.
- Is it suitable for children?
- The boat is flat, shaded and easy for families. Reserve trails involve uneven ground and roughly two hours of slow walking.
