The experience
Mistico Hanging Bridges – Wildlife Walk
Mistico Hanging Bridges Park sits on 250 hectares of protected primary rainforest near La Fortuna, at the edge of the Arenal Volcano area. The park's trail system covers 3.2 km in a loop and crosses 16 bridges — 6 of them suspension bridges that reach up to 45 meters (148 feet) above the forest floor. Walking above the canopy level puts you eye-to-eye with wildlife that most visitors never see from the ground: toucans landing on branches at arm's length, sloths sleeping between cecropia leaves, and mixed flocks of tanagers moving through the treetops.
The 6 hanging bridges are the highlight. Each one offers a different perspective — the longest stretches 97 meters across a canyon, while the tallest rises 45 meters above the understory. Morning mist sometimes fills the lower canopy from the suspension points, creating one of the most photographed views in Arenal. The 10 fixed bridges connect the trail through the forest interior, where light filters differently and ground-level species — coatis, agoutis, eyelash pit vipers — are more commonly found.
Wildlife you can realistically expect with a private naturalist guide includes: Three-toed Sloths (Bradypus variegatus) and Two-toed Sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni) resting in the canopy; Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta palliata) and White-faced Capuchins (Cebus imitator) moving through the upper story; Keel-billed Toucans (Ramphastos sulfuratus), Rufous Motmots (Baryphthengus martii), Blue-gray Tanagers and Passerini's Tanagers; Blue Morpho butterflies (Morpho peleides) along the trail; and occasionally Eyelash Pit Vipers (Bothriechis schlegelii) sleeping coiled on heliconia bracts. Over 350 bird species have been recorded in the park.
Going with a private guide from VIVO Expeditions makes a measurable difference. The park entrance is the same whether you go alone or with a guide — what changes is what you actually see. A certified naturalist with 15+ years in Arenal stops at the right spots, knows which cecropia tree the sloth was in yesterday, uses a spotting scope for distant birds, and can call your attention to the eyelash viper blending into a leaf three inches from your hand that you would have walked past. The pace is yours — no group schedule, no waiting, no compromises.
Best time to visit is early morning, 7:00–9:00 AM, before the temperature rises and before tour buses arrive from Guanacaste. The park is open daily 6:00 AM – 3:50 PM. From La Fortuna town center, it is approximately 25 minutes by car along Route 142 toward Lake Arenal.

Questions
Frequently asked
Is Mistico Hanging Bridges worth it?
Yes — Mistico is consistently rated one of the top nature experiences in La Fortuna. The 6 hanging bridges offer canopy-level views of the Arenal area that you cannot get from any trail on the ground. With a private naturalist guide you will see far more wildlife than going solo. Sloths, toucans, howler monkeys and motmots are commonly spotted. Most visitors say it is a highlight of their Costa Rica trip.
Do you need a guide for Mistico Hanging Bridges?
A private naturalist guide makes a significant difference in what you actually see. Sloths blend perfectly into the canopy, eyelash pit vipers match the color of leaves exactly, and mixed bird flocks move fast and quietly. A certified naturalist knows where to look, uses a spotting scope for distant species, and can identify every call you hear before you even see the bird. VIVO provides private guides exclusively — your group, your pace, your interests — with 15+ years of field experience in Arenal.
How long does Mistico Hanging Bridges take?
The 3.2 km trail takes 2 to 3 hours at a comfortable wildlife-watching pace. With a private guide you will stop more often — at a sloth in a cecropia tree, at a motmot perched low on a branch, at a viper coiled on a heliconia. Budget 2.5–3 hours to do it right. The park is open 6:00 AM to 3:50 PM (last entry at 3:50 PM). Mornings are best for wildlife and cooler temperatures.
How to get to Mistico Hanging Bridges from La Fortuna?
Mistico Park is approximately 25 minutes from La Fortuna town center by car. Take Route 142 west toward Lake Arenal — the park entrance is on the right just past the dam, up a paved access road. VIVO includes hotel pickup from your La Fortuna hotel in the tour price, so you do not need to arrange your own transport or worry about directions.
What time does Mistico Hanging Bridges open?
Mistico Park opens daily at 6:00 AM. Last entry is at 3:50 PM. Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) is the best time to visit: temperatures are lower, the forest is quieter, wildlife is most active, and you will avoid the groups that arrive from Guanacaste resorts mid-morning. VIVO tours depart at 7:00 AM for the morning session.
What to wear to Mistico Hanging Bridges?
Closed-toe shoes with good grip are mandatory — the trail can be slippery, especially in the rainy season (May–November). Light, breathable clothing works best. Bring a light rain jacket: the rainforest creates its own microclimate and rain can appear without warning at any time of year. Insect repellent, sunscreen for the bridge viewpoints, a water bottle, and a camera with a zoom lens for canopy wildlife.
How much does Mistico Hanging Bridges cost?
VIVO Expeditions charges from $135 per person for the private certified naturalist guide, exclusively for your group. Park entrance and transport are quoted separately when you book. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and we send you a complete itemized quote within a few hours.
Are Arenal Hanging Bridges and Mistico the same?
Yes — "Arenal Hanging Bridges" is the common name for Mistico Park. The official name of the park is Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, sometimes shortened to Mistico Park or Mistico Hanging Bridges. It is one single park located on Route 142 near the Lake Arenal dam, approximately 25 km west of La Fortuna town center. Sky Adventures is a completely different park nearby that offers ziplines in addition to hanging bridges.
