Boca Tapada Bird Photography Guide (2026)

Most photographers will never photograph a wild King Vulture. Their populations are scattered, their habits are wary, and they almost never descend to a baited perch. The hide at Boca Tapada changes that. A purpose-built blind brings these massive scavengers within 12–15 meters at eye level, giving you portrait-quality opportunities with their orange-and-purple wattles, ivory beaks, and stark black-and-white plumage. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes once a vulture commits. A 400mm lens is more than enough — many photographers shoot at 200–300mm to fit the whole bird.

A raised platform overlooks fruiting trees that attract Keel-billed Toucans, Yellow-throated Toucans, and Collared Aracaris in mixed flocks. The light is best from 6:00 to 8:00 AM when the birds are most active and the rainforest backlight hasn't turned harsh. Tripod recommended — many shots are at slower shutter speeds with the longer end of your lens.

Two hours at this private garden delivers Green Honeycreepers, Red-legged Honeycreepers, Passerini's Tanagers, Black-cowled Orioles, and several euphonia species at close range. The set-up uses native fruit and natural perches — not feeders — so the images don't scream "staged." This is one of the most productive 2-hour sessions you'll find for forest understory species.

The afternoon multi-flash setup uses 3–4 strobes to freeze hummingbird wings against a backlit forest backdrop. Species typically include Crowned Woodnymph, Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer, Long-billed Hermit, and several others. The setup is also available in natural light if you prefer that aesthetic. Either way, expect 200–400 frames per session.

As light fades, attention shifts to the macro subjects: Red-eyed Tree Frogs, Strawberry Poison Frogs, and 2–3 viper species including Eyelash Pit Viper and Fer-de-Lance (always behind glass or at safe distance with the guide). Bring a macro lens (90–105mm) and a ring flash or twin macro flash.

Boca Tapada is approximately 130 km north of La Fortuna — a 2.5-hour drive each way. The expedition leaves at 4:30 AM and returns around 7:30 PM. Lodging in Boca Tapada is also available if you want multiple days to maximize your shot list. Dry season (December–April) offers the cleanest light; green season (May–November) brings more frog and macro activity.
