One of the last strongholds of the Great Green Macaw, watched the way it should be: from the river, with a scope, at the hours the birds decide.
The San Carlos river corridor and the almendro forest behind it hold a species list you cannot assemble anywhere near the tourist corridor: Great Green Macaw, Agami Heron, Sunbittern, Semiplumbeous Hawk, Snowy Cotinga and a long tail of lowland residents.
Observation here is mostly done sitting still on a slow boat or standing at a forest edge with the scope already set. Distances are long, the light is flat under canopy, and the reward is behaviour watched at length rather than a checklist ticked at speed.
Target species and where they sit
Great Green Macaws move between almendro trees at dawn and late afternoon and are heard long before they are seen. Agami Herons hold to shaded bank overhangs. Sunbitterns work exposed gravel margins. Knowing which stretch of river matches which species is the whole job.
Boat observation and scope use
The boat drifts with the engine cut for approaches, which keeps herons on the bank instead of flushing them upstream. A scope mounted on the gunwale gives the whole group the same view; without one, most bank birds stay unidentified silhouettes at that distance.
Levels and pace
This is comfortable for a first-time birder — the boat does the walking — but it also satisfies experienced listers hunting specific lowland endemic-range species. Say which of the two you are and the guide changes how much time goes into commoner birds.
Seasons and hours
Macaw activity concentrates around the nesting months, when pairs return to known cavities; heron colonies are active in the wetter half of the year. River level changes what is reachable, so the best stretch in March is not the best stretch in October.

Getting to and around Boca Tapada
Boca Tapada is a working lowland district near the San Carlos river, not a tourist town — the practicalities are different from Arenal.
- Access road
- The last stretch is unpaved and slow. Budget the drive as part of the day rather than assuming a quick hop from La Fortuna.
- How long to stay
- One night is the minimum that makes sense; two gives you a dawn and a dusk without racing the road on both ends.
- Field conditions
- Hot, humid lowland forest with mud after rain. Rubber boots are commonly used; long sleeves help more than they look like they will.
- Connectivity
- Mobile signal is patchy along the river. Confirm arrangements before you leave paved road.
