Caño Negro Wildlife Tour
Discover one of Costa Rica's most important wetland ecosystems on a relaxed, family-friendly boat safari through the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge — a RAMSAR-designated site of international importance located near the Nicaraguan border. Typical day: 7:30 AM pickup at your La Fortuna hotel → arrive at the Río Frío boat dock around 9:00–9:30 AM → 2.5–3 hours navigating the lagoons, flooded forest and river channels with a bilingual naturalist guide and professional spotting scope → typical Costa Rican lunch at ~12:30–1:30 PM → return drive to La Fortuna arriving 4:30–5:00 PM depending on your hotel. Expect howler and spider monkeys, three species of caiman, sloths, iguanas, basilisks, river turtles, and a birding bonanza — roseate spoonbills, anhingas, wood storks, jabiru, ringed and Amazon kingfishers, boat-billed and bare-throated tiger herons and, in the dry season, Nicaraguan grackles and Northern jacanas. Wildlife density peaks December–April; the green season (May–November) brings lush landscapes and migratory activity. Included: bilingual naturalist guide, park fees, lunch, bottled water and fresh tropical fruit onboard. Transport is not included — we quote it separately by hotel and zone. Please note: breakfast is not included — request a breakfast box at your hotel the night before or eat before the 7:30 AM pickup. Suitable for all ages and mobility levels — no hiking required.

- Less than 36 hours before tour → 50% refund to original payment method, minus 5% transaction fee (fixed operational costs already committed: hides, transport, guides)
- No-shows are non-refundable and non-rescheduleable
- The 5% administrative fee is non-refundable and covers non-recoverable bank/processor fees (Stripe and PayPal retain ~3% on every transaction even when refunded) plus the cost of processing the cancellation. It is waived when we cancel for operational or weather reasons.
- All refunds are issued to the original payment method (card, PayPal, or bank transfer used at booking). We do not issue cash refunds under any circumstance.

How long does this tour last?
It lasts a full day: about 2 hours on the boat plus road time. Start times: 7:30am pickup, returning around 4:30–5:00pm.
Is transport or pickup included?
Transport is never included in the tour price. We quote it separately by hotel and zone so you only pay for the route you actually need.
How long is the drive?
About 2 hours each way from La Fortuna, with a stop on the road. It is a long day, so plan a light schedule afterwards.
What wildlife is typical?
Caimans, howler monkeys, river turtles, bats and dozens of water birds. Water level changes the species mix through the year.
What happens if it rains?
Rain is part of the rainforest and the tour normally runs; we bring rain gear. If conditions become unsafe, we reschedule or refund according to our policy.
