The experience
Esquipulas Rainforest Birding Tour
Esquipulas is the best-kept birding secret of Costa Rica's Central Pacific — a biological transition zone where the coastal lowlands meet the mountain foothills, forming a corridor that hosts more than 300 bird species in a relatively small area. This fully private full-day tour is designed primarily for birdwatchers focused on locating, identifying and enjoying the highest possible diversity, and secondarily for wildlife photographers who need the flexibility to wait for the right light without the constraints of a shared group. Expect regional endemics of the South Pacific slope — Fiery-billed Aracari, Baird's Trogon, Turquoise Cotinga, White-crested Coquette, Riverside Wren, Spot-crowned Euphonia — along with mixed-flock specialists (Golden-naped Woodpecker, Cherrie's Tanager, Charming Hummingbird) and majestic raptors including the King Vulture soaring on the ridge thermals. Our guides carry mid-to-high tier optics (Vortex, Swarovski and similar) for impeccable spotting inside dense canopy, and can assist with smartphone digiscoping. Pickup starts at 5:30 AM from your Manuel Antonio–area hotel; the drive to Esquipulas is roughly 30–45 minutes, so you arrive with the dawn chorus. A local breakfast at the reserve and light snacks are included. Suitable for beginner to advanced birders; because the group is private, the pace, target list and photography rhythm are entirely yours.
