A macro lens in the 60–105mm range is the foundation. The Canon 100mm f/2.8L, Nikon 105mm f/2.8, or Sony 90mm f/2.8 are all excellent. You will need an external flash — the built-in flash creates harsh shadows and flat lighting. A ring flash or twin-flash system with a diffuser produces the most natural-looking results. Bring a spare battery (or two) — flash-heavy shooting drains batteries fast in humid conditions.

Camera Settings: The Starting Point

Start with ISO 400, f/11, 1/200s (your flash sync speed). This combination gives you excellent depth of field for small subjects, freezes any movement with the flash, and keeps noise low. Adjust flash power to taste — 1/4 to 1/2 power with a diffuser is a good starting point. If you want ambient light in the background, slow the shutter to 1/30–1/60s and raise ISO to 800–1600.

Finding and Photographing Red-Eyed Tree Frogs

Red-eyed tree frogs (Agalychnis callidryas) are the icon of Costa Rica macro photography. They emerge at dusk and are most active 6:30–9:00 PM. Look for them on broad leaves 0.5–2 meters above water. The best compositions show the full body profile with eyes facing the camera — get low and shoot at frog-eye level. Use a black background by positioning the frog against open air rather than vegetation.

Never handle, move, or stress wildlife for a photograph. Our guides are trained to find subjects in natural positions and will never manipulate animals. Flash photography does not harm frogs or reptiles when used responsibly — avoid continuous bursts of full-power flash at close range. Keep headlamp intensity low near frogs.
