The experience

The Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias) is a monotypic family with cryptic plumage that transforms into two brilliant sun-like eyespots on the wings when threatened or displaying. Edward has identified a stable riverbank territory where a resident pair forages on invertebrates and small fish. With patience (and often a natural stimulus from the guide), the wing-spread display is possible in 40–60% of visits.

Edward's field tips

Get low — eye-level shots at 0.5–1 m from the ground are dramatically better than standing. Overcast light is ideal to preserve wing pattern detail.
