    The experience

Papa's Place – Night Tour — Group Tour

This is the shared departure of Papa's Place – Night Tour: a small group of no more than 15 travelers, on a fixed schedule, at a per-person rate. You share a VIVO naturalist guide with other travelers looking for the same thing you are — real wildlife, good light and an honest explanation of what you are seeing. The itinerary, the certified guide and the safety standards are identical to our private expedition; what changes is that the departure time is set and the group sets the pace. Transport is never shared: if you add it, it is private door-to-door for your party only.

Papa's Place is a small family-run rainforest reserve just outside La Fortuna that has quietly become the region's densest frog and reptile hotspot after dark. This 2-hour guided night tour is designed specifically for nocturnal wildlife: with a bilingual naturalist and low-impact LED flashlights, you walk short, well-maintained trails through a private garden and forest edge where cecropia, heliconia and bromeliad plantings concentrate amphibians in a small, photographable area. Expect red-eyed tree frogs (the classic Costa Rican poster species), gliding tree frogs, hourglass tree frogs, masked tree frogs, glass frogs on stream leaves, poison-dart frogs still active at dusk, and — with luck — the eyelash pit viper coiled over a leaf, sleeping brown-throated sloths, tarantulas, katydids, stick insects, kinkajous and olingos moving through the canopy. Because the reserve is compact and reserved for small groups, the pace is calm and unhurried, ideal for photography and for travelers who want a shorter, easier alternative to longer forest night walks. Rubber boots and flashlights are provided.Transport is not included — we quote it separately by hotel and zone. Rain and humidity actually improve amphibian activity, so the tour runs year-round and rarely disappoints.

The absolute best choice for our first trip to Costa Rica! I was scared to book our entire itinerary with just one company, but Vivo Expeditions exceeded every expectation. Elias's communication was top-notch from beginning to end and he followed up after every single tour. Safari River Boat with Nahil, Mistico Hanging Bridges & Arenal 1968 with Jose, Night Tour at Papa's Place, La Fortuna Waterfalls with Fabian — every guide went above and beyond. If you are nervous about booking your trip, you are in the best hands.

We booked a night tour and had a great time with Jose Luis. He was friendly and knowledgeable, guiding us through the night and finding beautiful frogs, basilisk, caiman, birds, crazy insects, and we even saw a Kinkajou scurrying in the treetops! He is an awesome photographer and we have beautiful pictures he took for us through his spotting scope.

Amazing experience from beginning to end. I contacted Elias before our first trip to Costa Rica to book nature tours for La Fortuna. He took our whole wish list — 2 night walks (Ecocentro Danaus and Papa's Place), canyoning, white water rafting with Arenal Rafting, sloth walk at Bogarin, chocolate and coffee tour at North Fields, zip lining at Sky Adventures and the 1968 trail to Arenal volcano. Luis was our nature guide (Gabriel for the sloth walk), both brilliant. Elias went over and above by messaging us each night with reminders and asking how our day had been. Would recommend wholeheartedly.

We had such an amazing experience with Elias Nature Tours from beginning to end. Elias took our whole wish list and booked everything: 2 night walks (Ecocentro Danaus and Papa's place), canyoning, white water rafting with Arenal Rafting, a sloth walk at Bogarin, chocolate and coffee tour at North Fields, zip lining at Sky Adventures and the 1968 trail to Arenal Volcano. He sent a full itinerary with codes and details. We saw a sloth mum and baby come down to ground at Bogarin — awesome! Luis was our guide for all nature tours and Gabriel for the sloth walk. Both were brilliant and so knowledgeable. Elias went over and above, messaging each night with reminders. Would recommend wholeheartedly.
