You start at Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, the most iconic canopy walk in Costa Rica: a 3.5 km main trail through primary rainforest and six suspension bridges rising up to 38 meters above the forest floor — that put you eye-level with the mid- and upper canopy. Expect keel-billed toucans, chestnut-mandibled toucans, blue-crowned motmots, Montezuma oropendolas, and reliable chances of brown-throated three-toed sloths, howler and spider monkeys, and eyelash pit vipers coiled in bromeliads. After a mid-day break, you continue to the Arenal 1968 Trails, a private reserve bordering Arenal Volcano National Park that preserves the actual lava flow from the 1968 eruption. The trail crosses cooled lava fields blanketed in pioneer vegetation, walks through regenerated primary forest, and climbs to a panoramic viewpoint of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal — one of the most complete geological and ecological stories you can walk in a single afternoon.
