Almost every traveler in La Fortuna ends up choosing between the same three volcano experiences: the Mistico Hanging Bridges canopy walk, the Arenal 1968 lava-flow trails, and the Classic Combo that pairs volcano trails with the waterfall and hot springs. They look similar online but they deliver very different days. Here is the honest comparison our guides give in person.
Mistico Hanging Bridges — Best for Canopy Wildlife
A 3.2 km loop with 6 hanging bridges and 10 fixed bridges through primary rainforest. You walk at canopy level, which is where the birds, sloths and howler monkeys actually are. Terrain is well maintained with some inclines; suitable for most ages. Choose this if wildlife and photography matter more than volcano views.
Arenal 1968 — Best for Volcano Views and Lava Fields
The 1968 trails cross the actual lava flow from the last major eruption, with the most open, unobstructed views of the cone and Lake Arenal. Footing is uneven volcanic rock, so it is more of a hike than a stroll. Choose this if you want landscape photography and geology over dense forest wildlife.
Classic Combo — Best for a Single Full Day
The Classic Combo compresses volcano trails, La Fortuna Waterfall and hot springs into one guided day. It is the highest-value option if your stay is short, but each stop is shorter than doing it standalone. Choose this when you only have one full day in La Fortuna.
Mistico + 1968 Combo — Best of Both
The Mistico and 1968 combo gives you canopy wildlife in the morning and volcano views in the afternoon with a single guide and a single transport. It is the option we recommend most often for first-time visitors who care about both wildlife and views.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mistico or Arenal 1968 better for seeing wildlife?
Mistico. The hanging bridges put you at canopy level in primary rainforest, where birds, sloths and monkeys are active. Arenal 1968 is open lava terrain with far better volcano views but less forest wildlife.
Can I do Mistico and Arenal 1968 on the same day?
Yes. We run a dedicated Mistico + 1968 combo with one guide and one vehicle, canopy walk in the morning and lava trails in the afternoon.
Is transport included in the tour price?
No. Transport is always quoted separately based on your hotel and zone, so you only pay for the distance you actually need.
How far ahead should I book?
Booking closes 36 hours before departure. Inside that window we can still take a request, but availability has to be confirmed by our team.
