Rafting near Arenal runs on two rivers with three very different intensity levels. The class number describes the rapids, but what really decides your day is who is in the boat: kids, first-timers, or an experienced group looking for continuous whitewater.

Balsa River Class II-III — Families and First-Timers

The friendliest option: continuous but forgiving rapids, warm water, calm pools for swimming and plenty of riverbank wildlife. Good for families with older children and for anyone who has never rafted. You still get real whitewater, not a float.

Balsa River Class III-IV — The Sweet Spot

Same beautiful river, higher water and bigger lines. Expect steady Class III with Class IV drops. You should be comfortable in moving water and able to follow paddle commands quickly. This is the option most active adult groups end up loving.

Sarapiqui River Class IV — Experienced Paddlers Only

Longer, steeper and far more technical, in a remote canyon with excellent wildlife. Strong swimmers and previous rafting experience required. Departures are earlier and the day is longer because of the drive.

    Safety, Age and Fitness

Every trip runs with certified river guides, helmets, PFDs and a safety kayak. Minimum ages rise with the class; our team confirms limits per departure. Not recommended for pregnancy, recent surgery, back or neck injuries.

What to Bring and How Booking Works

Quick-dry clothes, secured footwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Transport is quoted separately from your hotel and zone. Rafting departures close 36 hours ahead so we can lock guides and equipment; inside that window we take a request instead.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which rafting class is best for a first time?

Balsa River Class II-III. It has continuous rapids with forgiving lines, warm water and calm pools, so first-timers and families still get real whitewater safely.

Do I need rafting experience for Class IV?

Yes. Sarapiqui Class IV requires previous rafting experience and strong swimming ability. If in doubt, book Balsa Class III-IV instead.

Is transport to the river included?

Transport is quoted separately based on your hotel and zone, like every VIVO tour, so you only pay the distance you need.
