Manuel Antonio National Park (Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio) protects 1,983 hectares of coastal rainforest, mangrove and beach on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast — and it punches far above its size. The park hosts three monkey species (white-faced capuchin, mantled howler, Central American squirrel monkey), both two- and three-toed sloths, agoutis, coatis, raccoons, iguanas, basilisks and over 350 bird species, all on well-maintained trails that any reasonably fit visitor can walk. With a certified naturalist guide and a spotting scope, a 3-hour morning entry typically yields 6–10 wildlife highlights you would otherwise miss.
Beyond the national park itself, the surrounding region offers some of the richest nature in the country. The Damas Mangroves north of Quepos are explored by silent boat and reveal mangrove crabs, boa constrictors, white ibis, herons and the occasional crocodile. Esquipulas and the inland rainforest behind the coast are a birding hotspot with hermits, sabrewings, trogons and toucans. The first 2–3 hours after opening (7–10 AM) are by far the best. Sloths, monkeys and birds are most active in the cool morning hours, the trails are quieter, and your photography light is soft. Afternoons are hot and animals rest.
