Expert-guided birding experiences in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth
The Arenal and La Fortuna region is home to over 500 bird species, making it one of the premier birdwatching destinations in Central America. From vibrant toucans and resplendent quetzals to rare hummingbirds and elusive raptors, our private guided tours give you the best chance to observe and photograph Costa Rica's incredible avian diversity.
La Fortuna and the surrounding Arenal region sit at the meeting point of Caribbean and Pacific bird communities, which is why local checklists routinely top 500 species within a one-hour radius. Lowland rainforest, mid-elevation cloud forest, river edges, and pasture mosaics all sit minutes from town — meaning a single private outing can produce toucans, motmots, trogons, tanagers, and multiple hummingbird species in the same morning.
Our birding tours are guided by local naturalists who bird this region year-round, carry a high-end spotting scope, and know exactly where each target species is showing this week. Most outings run 4–6 hours starting before sunrise (the best activity window), with hotel pickup in La Fortuna included. Half-day formats work well for casual birders; serious listers usually combine a Bogarín / Mistico / Arenal-trail morning with an afternoon at a hummingbird garden or a full-day expedition to Boca Tapada for Great Green Macaw and northern lowland specialties.
All birding experiences are private by default — your own guide, your own pace, and the freedom to stop as long as a target stays in view. Group sizes stay small (1–6 guests) so everyone gets the scope.

On a typical 4–6 hour private birding tour, guests see between 40 and 80 species. Full-day Boca Tapada expeditions regularly produce 100+ species including Great Green Macaw.
Bringing your own is ideal, but we provide quality binoculars on request at no extra cost, plus a high-end spotting scope for every group.
Birding is excellent year-round. The dry season (December–April) offers easier trail conditions and migrant species; the green season (May–November) is peak for nesting behavior, hummingbirds, and dramatic photography light.
