Best Time to Visit Costa Rica in 2027 (Month by Month)

There is no single best month to visit Costa Rica — there is a best month for what you actually want to see. This is the version we give our own guests for 2027: what each month looks like on the ground around Arenal, Boca Tapada and Manuel Antonio, which weeks fill first, and how far ahead you realistically need to book.

January to March 2027 — dry, bright, and the first to sell out

These are the driest, sunniest months and the busiest of the year. Volcano views are at their clearest, trails are firm, and resident birds are nesting. The trade-off is demand: Christmas through Easter is when hotels, guides and small-group departures fill first. If you are travelling between 1 January and 31 March 2027, aim to hold your dates 4 to 6 months ahead. Easter week 2027 (late March) behaves like a national holiday — local families travel too, and availability tightens even further.

April to May 2027 — the sweet spot most travellers miss

April keeps most of the dry-season weather while prices and crowds ease off after Easter. May brings the first afternoon showers, which is exactly when the forest turns brilliant green and amphibian activity explodes. For photographers this is a genuinely strong window: mornings are usually clear and workable, and the light after a passing shower is far better than the flat glare of February midday.

June to August 2027 — green season with real mornings

The pattern most people get wrong: green season does not mean all-day rain. Around Arenal, mornings are frequently dry and rain arrives mid-afternoon. Book the guided activity early in the day and the weather is rarely the problem. July and early August pick up again with northern-hemisphere holidays, so families should treat these weeks like high season for booking purposes even though rates are lower.

September to October 2027 — wettest on the Pacific, quietest everywhere

These are the two wettest months on the Pacific side and the Arenal region, and also the cheapest and emptiest. If your priority is having a reserve almost to yourself with a private guide, this is your window. One caveat we always give honestly: multi-day itineraries in these months need flexibility built in. Keep one buffer day, and do not schedule a bucket-list activity for your last morning.

November to December 2027 — the recovery month and the rush

November is the underrated month of the Costa Rican calendar: rain drops off quickly, the landscape is still saturated green, and rates are still low in the first three weeks. From roughly 18 December, everything shifts to peak — prices, occupancy and traffic. If you want the last two weeks of December 2027, treat September 2026 as your planning deadline rather than a suggestion.

Wildlife calendar: what each season actually gives you

Resplendent quetzal is most reliable from February to June, during breeding season in the highlands. Great green macaws are active around Boca Tapada from December through April. Nesting sea turtles on the Caribbean run July to September. Frogs and macro subjects peak in the wet months, May to October. So the honest answer to "when should I come" is: tell us the species or the photograph you want, and the month chooses itself.

How far ahead to book each piece of a 2027 trip

Hotels and internal flights first, 5 to 8 months out for high season. Specialist experiences second — private birding, photography hides and Boca Tapada expeditions run with one guide and a fixed number of seats, so 3 to 5 months is normal. Day tours and transfers are the flexible part. We hold those on request with no payment up front: we confirm availability with the operator, send you a written quote, and only then a payment link. Nothing is charged while you are still deciding.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Costa Rica in 2027?

February and March give the driest weather, April and November give the best balance of weather, price and quiet trails. For quetzal, choose February to June.

How far in advance should I book a 2027 Costa Rica trip?

Four to six months for January-to-March and late December travel; two to three months is usually enough for the green season, May through November.

Is the green season a bad time to visit Arenal?

No. Mornings around Arenal are frequently dry from June to August and rain tends to arrive mid-afternoon, so early guided activities run normally.

Do I have to pay to hold 2027 dates?

No. We confirm availability with the operator first and send a written quote; a payment link only comes after you approve the plan.

Which weeks of 2027 sell out first in La Fortuna?

Christmas and New Year, Easter week in late March, and the July family-holiday weeks. Those are the dates worth locking early.

Send us your 2027 dates and the wildlife you care about most — we will tell you honestly whether that month works, and hold the dates while you decide. No payment required to check availability.
