Best Time to Visit Arenal for Wildlife: A Seasonal Species Calendar

Plan the trip around the species clusters, not around the weather forecast

    • Updated 2026-08-27

Most "best time to visit" advice only talks about rain. For wildlife it is the wrong lens. Around Arenal and the northern lowlands, the year breaks into species clusters: months when a specific target is predictable, close and photographable. This calendar maps those clusters — including Agami Heron, Great Green Macaw and Royal Flycatcher — to the tours that actually reach them, so you can time a trip around what you want to see.

Cluster 1 — Agami Heron (January to April)

The Agami Heron is a shy, shade-loving heron of flooded forest margins. As Cano Negro water levels drop between January and April, birds concentrate along accessible channels and can be worked from a slow boat at eye level. Pair it with Boat-billed Heron roosts and Northern Jacana in the same morning.

Cluster 2 — Great Green Macaw (February to May)

Great Green Macaws nest in almendro trees in the Boca Tapada lowlands, and February to May is when pairs are most visible, vocal and predictable near nest cavities. This is the single best reason to build a Boca Tapada full-day or overnight into a February–May trip.

Cluster 3 — Royal Flycatcher and Understory Specialties (May to August)

The Royal Flycatcher is the trophy of the humid understory, best searched in the green season when insect activity peaks and mixed flocks move through low forest. May to August also delivers peak amphibian activity, which makes the same window the strongest for night macro sessions.

Cluster 4 — Northern Migrants (October to March)

From October, North American migrants layer on top of the resident list: warblers, tanagers, orioles, raptor kettles overhead. Species counts on a single Arenal morning are highest in this window, which is why birding-focused visits often choose November to February.

Cluster 5 — Resident Nesting and Clear Volcano Mornings (February to April)

Resident nesting peaks and mornings are driest, giving both active birds and unobstructed volcano views. If you want the classic Arenal photo plus dependable wildlife, this is the safest window — and the busiest, so book earlier.

What Does Not Depend on Season

Sloths, toucans, howler monkeys, coatis, and the nocturnal cast are active year-round. Rain in the green season falls mostly after 1 PM, so we schedule wildlife walks, bridges and boat trips in the morning and keep hot springs for the afternoon.

How to Book Around a Cluster

Pick your target cluster first, then anchor the trip on the tour that reaches it: Cano Negro by boat for Agami, Boca Tapada for macaws, night macro and understory birding for the green-season specialties. Transport is quoted separately by hotel and zone, and booking closes 36 hours before departure.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When can I see the Agami Heron near Arenal?

January to April, on the Cano Negro boat route. Falling water levels concentrate the birds along shaded channels where a slow boat can approach quietly.

What months are best for Great Green Macaw?

February to May, during nesting in the Boca Tapada almendro trees. Pairs are vocal and predictable around nest cavities in that window.

Is the green season bad for wildlife in Arenal?

No. May to August is peak amphibian and understory activity, including the Royal Flycatcher, and rain usually arrives after 1 PM so morning tours run normally.

Which months give the highest bird species count?

October to March, when northern migrants join resident species. November to February is the usual choice for birding-focused visits.

How far ahead should I book a seasonal target?

Two to three weeks in February–April, and one week in green season. Booking closes 36 hours before departure so we can confirm guide, tickets and vehicle.
